Issued for a lecture by critic and art historian Miwon Kwon addressing the mutable status of Felix Gonzalez-Torres’s work: its dependence on spectators, owners, institutions, certificates and repeated physical renewal. The lecture title was subsequently used for Kwon’s major essay in the comprehensive 2006 Gonzalez-Torres monograph edited by Julie Ault.

The recto reproduces “Untitled” (Blue Mirror), one of Gonzalez-Torres’s paper-stack works from 1990. The authorised work consists of printed sheets presented as an endlessly renewable supply; the Foundation records the original sheets as 28 × 22 inches, with the stack maintained at an ideal height of 20 inches. This small card is therefore not an individual sheet from the artwork, but an institutional reproduction used to circulate its image.

The distinction is what gives the object its particular interest. An infinitely replenishable work is compressed into a finite announcement. A sculpture intended to enter public circulation becomes the visual support for a lecture examining how an artwork acquires and retains its identity. Kwon’s argument moves through paper stacks, audience participation, ownership and certification, asking where the work resides when its physical components may be removed, replaced or remade.

The card operates between scholarship, publicity and reproduction. It does not contain the artwork. It records one of the systems through which the artwork continued: an image, a lecture, a date and a temporary audience. The event has passed; the administrative support remains.

Condition: good vintage condition. Light surface rubbing and handling marks, faint age-related soiling to the reverse, and minor edge and corner wear. No significant tears or creasing.
