Organised in the year Kippenberger would have turned fifty, Das 2. Sein was the first major survey mounted after his death in 1997. More than 500 works produced between 1976 and 1997 occupied the museum’s ground floor, atriums and exterior spaces, moving between painting, posters, collage, photography, sculpture and reconstructed installations. The title located Kippenberger’s professional performance of the artist — excessive, systematic and repeatedly self-staged — as a kind of ‘second being.’

The accompanying series, Inhalt auf Reisen, extended the retrospective through six lectures on Kippenberger’s unrealised projects, music, Medusa paintings, self-presentation, photography and his position within 1980s painting. The speakers included Veit Loers, Wolfgang Brauneis, Ralph Melcher, Diedrich Diederichsen, Andreas Schalhorn and Johannes Gachnang.

On the front, the artist appears divided between portrait, skeleton, mask and painted emblem. On the reverse, the same identity is redistributed as a programme of subjects and speakers. The exhibition travelled through objects; its content continued through speech.
