Published for the exhibition at Museum Haus Lange, Krefeld, 9 April – 18 June 1989, curated by Julian Heynen. The Franz West archive bibliography records the publication as Heft 1 and 2, with texts by Heynen and Schmatz and photographs by Förg. Basis Wien records the exhibition under installation, sculpture, and object.

The two booklets divide the exhibition’s material between them: Heft 1 carries installation photographs — West’s wire-frame chairs, sculptural seating forms, and textile works installed in the Mies van der Rohe house — alongside Heynen’s essay and a poem by Vittorio Martini. Heft 2 carries Schmatz’s extended prose text on chairs, sitting, and social space, with footnotes citing Deleuze, Wittgenstein, Lacan, and Lévy-Strauss, and a glossary of French furniture terms. The orange wrappers carry the text on their covers as well as inside.

A strong early West publication from the moment his work was moving from the Passstücke toward furniture, seating, social use, and sculpture as something completed through the viewer. Haus Lange is especially relevant: a Mies van der Rohe house turned contemporary exhibition site, where domestic architecture, museum display, and usable sculpture meet directly.

Within The New Rare register, this is not only a catalogue. It is a small two-part support system for an exhibition: one booklet carrying the installation image, the other carrying text, instruction, language, and theory. West’s chairs and sculptural forms are shown inside a former private house, photographed by another artist, then redistributed as printed matter. Furniture becomes sculpture; exhibition becomes booklet; use becomes record.

Condition: Good vintage condition. Light handling, minor rubbing, faint edge wear, and age toning. Staples intact. The orange wrappers remain bright. Ships flat in a rigid mailer with tracking; international shipping available.
