VIJA CELMINS, BRICE MARDEN & AGNES MARTIN — Surface / Infinity, Craig F. Starr Gallery, New York, 2012

Published for the exhibition held at Craig F. Starr Gallery, New York, from 4 April to 25 May 2012. The exhibition brought together paintings and drawings by Celmins, Marden and Martin through a shared concern with surface, repetition and the suggestion of space extending beyond the physical limits of the work.

Celmins’ ocean surfaces, Marden’s dense graphite fields and Martin’s measured grids appear materially distinct but structurally close. Each begins with a restricted visual language and arrives at something difficult to contain: distance, duration and the possibility of an image continuing beyond its edge.

The publication mirrors this restraint. Pale reproductions sit within generous white space, while the ribbed grey wrappers make the catalogue itself feel like another worked surface. Deanna Petherbridge’s essay considers the exhibition as a non-hierarchical meeting of three practices rather than a conventional survey.
