Collection: Visual AIDS

Visual AIDS is a New York-based non-profit organisation founded in 1988 that utilises art to fight AIDS by provoking dialogue, supporting HIV-positive artists and preserving a legacy. It was founded by a group of arts professionals including Patrick O’Connell, Gary Garrels, Frank Moore and others in response to the AIDS crisis, and created the Red Ribbon — the first AIDS awareness ribbon — in 1991, as well as Day Without Art, an annual day of mourning and action observed by cultural institutions worldwide. Visual AIDS maintains the Archive Project, a collection of work by HIV-positive artists, and produces exhibitions, publications and programmes that keep the histories of AIDS activism and queer culture visible. It was included in the History of Storytelling archive section of Know Who You Are at Every Age at the Bronx River Art Center in 2014, curated by Q_Raider and BDGRMMR.
