Collection: Van Biel

Michael von Biel (born 1937) is a German-born artist and avant-garde composer associated with the Fluxus movement, whose work bridges sound and visual art through material exploration, process, and conceptual theory.

After studying under Cornelius Cardew and Karlheinz Stockhausen, von Biel moved to Cologne and London, establishing close links with the European avant-garde and editing English texts for the Fluxus prospectus. In the late 1960s he shifted towards graphic and visual arts, studying at the Düsseldorfer Kunstakademie under Joseph Beuys from 1968 to 1969.

His visual works blend tempera, watercolour, and pencil, treating the surface as a space for process rather than resolution — frequently incorporating text notes, monograms, and visible traces of working method.
