Rose Wylie (born 1934) is a British painter whose large-scale, energetically abbreviated figurative works draw on film stills, sports, memory, and popular culture, rendered with a directness that resists both illustration and abstraction. Associated with a broad renewal of interest in painterly figuration, her work developed largely outside institutional attention until her sixties, when recognition arrived with gathering momentum. She was awarded the John Moores Painting Prize in 2011, the Charles Wollaston Award in 2014, and held a major solo presentation at Tate Britain. In 2026 she became the first woman painter to receive a solo exhibition in the Royal Academy's Main Galleries.
