Collection: Robert Whitman

Robert Whitman (born 1935, New York) is an American artist who pioneered the integration of film, performance, and everyday objects in theatrical events that he termed “American Moon” pieces and, later, “Presentations.” Working at the Judson Dance Theater and Reuben Gallery from the late 1950s, he developed a practice in which projected film and live action created layered, durational environments distinct from both Happenings and conventional theatre. Whitman participated in 6 Artists, 6 Exhibitions at the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, in 1968, and collaborated with engineers at Bell Telephone Laboratories in the landmark 9 Evenings: Theatre and Engineering project in New York in 1966.
