Ridley Scott (born 1937, United Kingdom) is a British filmmaker and commercial director whose feature films span science fiction, historical epic and crime. Trained at the Royal College of Art, he worked extensively in television advertising before directing Alien (1979), Blade Runner (1982) and Thelma & Louise (1991). Scott’s background in visual design and advertising has remained a consistent influence on his filmmaking practice. He participated in Spellbound: Art and Film at the Hayward Gallery, London, in 1996, a collaboration with the British Film Institute marking the centenary of cinema.
