Pierre Huyghe

Pierre Huyghe (born 1962) is a French artist whose work operates across film, installation, performance and living systems to examine the conditions under which reality, fiction and time are constructed and experienced. His practice resists fixed form: works incorporate animals, weather, biological processes and unpredictable durations that exceed the control of the artist or institution. Untitled (Human Mask) (2014) filmed a monkey wearing a girl’s mask in an abandoned restaurant in post-Fukushima Japan; After ALife Ahead (2017) transformed an ice rink into a living ecosystem of organisms, minerals and algorithmic processes. Huyghe was a central figure in the relational aesthetics debates of the 1990s and has continued to develop a practice that tests the boundaries between art, ecology, science and speculative fiction.
