Peter Blake (born 1932, Dartford) is a British painter whose practice became foundational to the development of British Pop Art through its incorporation of popular imagery, vernacular typography, and the iconography of entertainment, sport and music-hall culture. Working from the late 1950s alongside Richard Hamilton and Eduardo Paolozzi, he developed a distinctive figurative mode that drew on fairgrounds, wrestlers, pin-ups and toy-shop display, culminating in the cover design for the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band in 1967. He was a founder member of the Brotherhood of Ruralists in 1975 and was elected a Royal Academician in 1981; a major retrospective was held at Tate Gallery, London, in 1983, with subsequent surveys at Tate Liverpool in 2007.
