Paula Rego

Paula Rego (1935–2022, Portugal / United Kingdom) was a Portuguese-British painter and printmaker whose figurative work drew on fairy tale, folklore, literature and personal history to produce images of psychological intensity and political directness. Working primarily in pastel and acrylic, her paintings frequently centre on female experience, power and the body, and are notable for their narrative ambiguity and unsettling emotional charge. Rego was associated with the London School of figurative painting and was appointed the first Associate Artist of the National Gallery, London, in 1990. She participated in Spellbound: Art and Film at the Hayward Gallery in 1996.
