Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist and writer whose long career transformed the course of twentieth-century art. Born in Málaga and trained in Barcelona and Madrid, he settled in Paris in 1904, where the development of Cubism with Georges Braque between 1907 and 1914 fundamentally altered Western pictorial convention. His output across seven decades—spanning Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, Guernica, the Vollard Suite, the Musée Picasso ceramics and the late painting cycles—remained a consistent reference point for subsequent artistic practice. He exhibited at Documenta I in 1955 and his work entered major public collections worldwide during his lifetime.
