Collection: Jop van Bennekom

Jop van Bennekom (born 1970) is a Dutch graphic designer, art director and editor who co-founded BUTT Magazine with Gert Jonkers in Amsterdam in 2001 and Fantastic Man in 2005. Van Bennekom trained as a graphic designer and his visual approach to both publications — characterised by economy of means, directness and a refusal of conventional magazine hierarchies of image and text — was central to their influence on independent publishing. His design practice extended to commissions for fashion clients and cultural institutions, and his work has been exhibited and discussed in the context of both graphic design history and the study of independent magazine culture. BUTT is widely credited as a foundational document of 2000s queer independent publishing.
