Collection: John Pfahl

John Pfahl (1939–2020) was an American photographer best known for his Altered Landscapes series (1974–1978), in which he introduced geometric arrangements of string, tape, and foil into natural settings before photographing them, creating illusionistic plays between flat pictorial elements and three-dimensional space. His work engages directly with questions of photographic framing, representation, and the conventions of landscape photography, and is held in major museum collections including the George Eastman Museum, Rochester, and the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Pfahl was included in international surveys of contemporary photography throughout the 1980s and 1990s.
