Jayne County (born 1947) is an American musician, performance artist and trans pioneer whose career began in the New York underground in the late 1960s, where she was a participant in the Stonewall Riots and a figure in the Warhol Factory milieu. County fronted the band Wayne County and the Electric Chairs and released recordings on Safari Records in the late 1970s, producing tracks that anticipated the confrontational energy of punk while addressing trans identity with directness unusual for the period. Her visibility in publications including BUTT Magazine connected her historical significance to a younger generation. She is recognised as one of the foundational figures of both punk rock and trans cultural history.
