Collection: Hank Willis Thomas

Hank Willis Thomas (born 1976) is a New York-based conceptual artist whose practice spans photography, video, installation and public art, engaging with questions of race, identity, advertising, popular culture and the representation of Black men in American media. His work frequently appropriates and recontextualises commercial imagery — particularly sports and advertising photography — to expose the ideological structures through which Black bodies are commodified and consumed. Thomas is also a co-founder of the public art collective For Freedoms, which uses artistic practice to engage with civic participation and political discourse. He has exhibited widely in major international institutions and his work is held in significant public collections. He was included in the S/O section of Know Who You Are at Every Age at the Bronx River Art Center in 2014, curated by Q_Raider and BDGRMMR.
