Georgina Starr

Georgina Starr (born 1968, Leeds) is a British artist whose practice spans video, installation, performance, drawing and publication. Emerging in the early 1990s, Starr developed a body of work centred on fantasy, obsession, memory and the construction of identity — often through the figure of a fictional alter ego or an elaborately staged interior world.

Her work frequently takes the form of extended narrative projects: The Party (1995), Tuberama (1994), and the Bunny Lakes series each construct immersive fictional universes with their own characters, soundtracks, costumes and logic. The work draws on the aesthetics of pop culture — teen magazines, horror films, girl groups, amateur theatre — and subjects them to a process of obsessive elaboration that transforms the familiar into something stranger and more private.

Starr has exhibited internationally and her publications — artist books, catalogues, and printed matter produced in connection with her projects — are often integral to the work itself, extending the fictional world of each project into the format of the page.
