Collection: George Brecht

George Brecht (1926–2008) was an American artist and chemist whose practice was central to the development of Fluxus. From the late 1950s, Brecht produced event scores — brief written instructions for actions that could be performed by anyone, anywhere — that dissolved the boundary between art and everyday life. His Water Yam (1963), a box of event score cards published by Fluxus, remains one of the defining objects of the movement.

Brecht studied with John Cage at the New School for Social Research in New York and was closely associated with George Maciunas, Yoko Ono, and other Fluxus artists. His practice anticipated conceptual art's interest in instruction, indeterminacy, and the dematerialisation of the art object. He lived and worked in Cologne from 1972 until his death.

Publications gathered here include artist books, event scores, and printed matter relating to George Brecht's practice. Original and period items.
