David Sedaris (born 1956) is an American author, humorist and radio contributor whose work moves between memoir, fiction and satirical observation. He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, graduating in 1987, and first came to wider attention through his radio appearances on National Public Radio in the early 1990s, when recordings of his readings drew an unusually large public response. His published collections, including Barrel Fever (1994), Naked (1997) and Me Talk Pretty One Day (2000), established him as one of the most widely read American writers of his generation, known for deadpan comic timing and an autobiographical mode that blurs the boundary between fact and invention. He has contributed regularly to The New Yorker and performed internationally; his early work in the Chicago alternative press, including contributions to White Walls, predates his public profile by several years.
