Collection: Boyle Family
Boyle Family is the collective name adopted by Mark Boyle (1934–2005) and Joan Hills (born 1936), later joined by their children Sebastian and Georgia, for their ongoing collaborative project Journey to the Surface of the Earth (begun 1968). Working by randomly selecting sites and casting exact replicas of ground surfaces in fibreglass and resin, their practice constitutes a systematic, dispassionate record of the earth’s surface free from aesthetic preference or authorial selection. They represented Britain at the Venice Biennale in 1978 and exhibited internationally over several decades.
