Collection: Bill Brandt

Bill Brandt (1904–1983) was a British photographer of German origin whose work ranged across social documentary, portraiture, landscape and the nude, producing some of the most distinctive and formally inventive images in twentieth-century British photography. His early work documented class divisions in 1930s England before his practice expanded into surrealist-inflected nudes, literary portraits and dramatic landscape studies characterised by extreme wide-angle distortion and deep tonal contrast. Brandt was the subject of a major retrospective organised by John Szarkowski at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 1969, and represented in the collection of MoMA.
