Collection: André Villers

André Villers (1930–2016) was a French photographer best known for his sustained collaboration with Pablo Picasso, whom he first met in Vallauris in 1953. Picasso taught Villers photography and the two worked together extensively over the following decades, producing photographic portraits, photomontages and the Diurnes series (1962), made by cutting stencils from Picasso’s drawings and printing them directly onto photographic paper. Villers’ portraits of Picasso—including the 1959 image of Picasso in Gary Cooper’s cowboy hat and revolver—became among the most widely reproduced images of the artist, and continued to circulate as source material in subsequent artistic practice.
