The images were produced as artist postcards and made freely available to museum visitors rather than sold as conventional editions.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWhen invited to contribute, Leonard considered photographing her childhood home and the West 125th Street library before returning to this kindergarten portrait from 1968. She was drawn to what the image retains beyond its intended purpose: children not yet performing for the camera, assembled beneath an American flag whose meaning they had not yet learned to interpret.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA standardised school photograph becomes a personal archive, an artist-selected image and an institutional edition.
