Valeria Liebermann's essay 'Photography as Proving Ground' draws on Ruff's account of why the portraits had to exist as a series: one photograph could assert something, but an idea of 'the human being' required repetition and difference across many. Jacques Herzog's essay addresses a decade-long working relationship that began when Ruff photographed the Ricola storage building in Laufen for the architects' Venice Architecture Biennale entry in 1991 and continued through the Eberswalde Library façade and the HypoVereinsbank arcades in Munich.
