Sur arrived in New York from Montreal in 1976 and later became co-director of Gracie Mansion Gallery, while his writing and organising developed through Black gay literary and artistic communities including the Blackheart Collective and Other Countries.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe publication gathers five short poems concerned with fascination, love, sodomy, marriage and fantasy, together with an excerpt from the longer work \u003cem\u003eWIH\u003c\/em\u003e. The texts originate in Sur’s writings of the 1970s and early 1980s. For this 2010 second edition, Sur states that the original pages of the first edition were scanned and reproduced to raise funds for Other Countries, the Black gay writers’ workshop with which he had been involved since the early 1990s. Other Countries emerged in 1986 from a lineage that included the earlier Blackheart Collective.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThat act of republication is what makes the object particularly good. An early text is not rewritten but returned to circulation. The original pages are scanned, an edition of 100 is produced, and writing made by a younger version of the author becomes material reconsidered by the same author almost thirty years later. Publication becomes a form of self-archiving.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe surviving envelope extends this further. Numbered 70\/100 to correspond with the chapbook inside, it preserves the publication’s original apparatus of distribution. The envelope is not simply packaging: it identifies the object, numbers it and prepares it to move from one person to another.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWriting becomes document. The document becomes archive. The archive is reproduced and circulated again. It sits particularly well between artist publication, queer literary history and archival object — an edition whose significance lies as much in its second circulation as in its first.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eCondition: Good.
