Small creases and edge wear to the folded handout; invitation clean and complete.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe exhibition was Rineke Dijkstra’s third presentation at Galerie Marian Goodman in Paris and brought together two video works commissioned for Manifesta 10 in St Petersburg the previous year. \u003cem\u003eMarianna (The Fairy Doll)\u003c\/em\u003e follows a ten-year-old ballet student rehearsing for an audition at the Vaganova Academy; \u003cem\u003eThe Gymschool, St Petersburg\u003c\/em\u003e records pupils at the Zhemchuzhina Olympic School repeatedly forming and correcting the poses required by rhythmic gymnastics.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eNeither film begins with a completed performance. Instruction, repetition, concentration and interruption remain visible as the children move between the roles assigned to them and the expressions that escape those roles. The three-screen structure of \u003cem\u003eThe Gymschool\u003c\/em\u003e places different stages of training beside one another, while \u003cem\u003eMarianna\u003c\/em\u003e remains with a single dancer throughout an extended rehearsal.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe invitation removes the exhibition information from the image, leaving a young gymnast folded into a pose against a nearly empty room. The accompanying handout restores the dates, titles, biography and critical text, opening across four panels of stills from the two works.
