The Grand Palais presented the major survey of his painting; the Bibliothèque Nationale, almost simultaneously, exhibited the engraver, collage-maker and illustrator. The division was institutionally tidy. Ernst's practice was not.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe BnF exhibition traced a graphic career begun in 1911 and extending to more than 600 works. This catalogue condenses that largely bibliophilic history into 194 entries and 54 plates, moving between prints, photographic collages, frontispieces and illustrated books — the part of Ernst's output least visible to the public and most legible to the first Surrealist collectors for whom it was made. It also became an unintended late-career summation: the exhibition closed in September 1975, and Ernst died in Paris the following April, one night before his eighty-fifth birthday. Published as a retrospective, it became, rather quickly, a final record.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThis uncommon copy retains the original two-sided Bibliothèque Nationale press communiqué — a single folded sheet designed to be temporary and discarded. It supplies everything the catalogue leaves out: admission at six francs, opening hours, Métro and bus routes, arrangements for group visits, and notice of the library's next exhibition. It also announces a catalogue illustrated with 50 plates; the finished publication contains 54. The historical record grew by four images between publicity and binding. Catalogues preserve the exhibition; the communiqué preserves how it reached its first audience.
