mark-borthwick-xerox-2000-1-maison-martin-margiela-2002
MARK BORTHWICK — Xerox: 2000-1, Maison Martin Margiela, c. 2002

Artist photobook. 21.0 × 27.2 cm. 200 pages. Softcover. Photocopied grayscale reproduction, self-published by Mark Borthwick, c. 2002. Blank tan outer cover. No title, no text, no credits on the cover or spine.

Originally connected to Borthwick’s 1998 interpretation of Maison Martin Margiela’s Fall–Winter 1998/99 collection, first published as 2000-1. When the original edition sold out and became quickly unobtainable, Borthwick is understood to have made small Xerox runs for friends who had missed or could not afford the first edition. These copies were made by placing the original book directly on a copier rather than reprinting the photographs flat — producing visible copier shadows, softened contrast, tonal variation across pages, and an intentionally provisional, handmade feel that sits close to Margiela’s own language of absence, reproduction, anonymity and anti-luxury.

The interior moves through grayscale photographs of a female figure — seated, standing, in profile, from behind — shot against plain studio grounds. The images are quiet, almost clinical, and entirely without styling in the conventional sense. A handwritten text page in French and English appears mid-sequence, dense and running edge to edge, describing movement, proximity and the body in terms that are at once intimate and structural. The photocopy process absorbs the photographs into its own grain: what survives is posture, gesture, the back of a head, a ponytail, a white chair.

Borthwick’s Margiela work sits at the edge of fashion image, artist book and private circulation. These Xerox copies have since taken on their own cult status — objects that document not only the original photographs but the conditions of their reproduction and distribution.

Condition: good vintage condition. Age toning, handling wear, soft corners, light surface marks and creasing visible. Xerox tonal variation and production irregularities are inherent to the edition.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0991/5636/1554/files/Borthwick_Mark._The_Xerox_Books._2002_Book_2_front.jpg?v=1782639827
