The exterior photograph, taken by Jutta Brandt in 1996, shows Young and Zazeela at a performance of \u003cem\u003ePoem for Chairs, Tables, Benches etc.\u003c\/em\u003e in Hamburg. Unfolded, the reverse becomes an extensive monochrome programme containing essays, performance details, credits and photographic portraits. A pocket-sized document expands into a 60-centimetre printed field.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eLa Monte Young’s sustained tones, extended durations and work with the Theatre of Eternal Music helped establish the vocabulary of drone and early musical minimalism. Marian Zazeela developed light, colour, projection and symmetrical sculptural forms alongside the music, making their collaboration inseparable from installation and visual art. Their continuing Dream House project joined precisely tuned sound with Zazeela’s light environments to create a continuous, inhabitable work rather than a conventional concert experience.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe Barbican event records that influence returning through another generation. Pulp performed material from the forthcoming \u003cem\u003eThis Is Hardcore\u003c\/em\u003e, including the live debuts of its title track; Spiritualized presented songs from \u003cem\u003eLadies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space\u003c\/em\u003e; Nick Cave performed at the piano with Warren Ellis. The programme therefore occupies an unusual point between the New York avant-garde of the 1960s and British popular music at the end of the 1990s.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAs an object, it is both record and relay. An uncompromising proposition from the early experimental underground is repeated by a major cultural institution, circulated through performers shaped by its consequences, and finally retained as folded paper. Poster, programme, tribute and fundraising instrument occupy the same support.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eCondition: good vintage condition.
