Words remain briefly recognisable before collapsing into approximate lengths, broken patterns and typographic residue.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eRubbings were taken directly from the type, reduced to one-third scale and printed in reverse on tracing paper. The poem must therefore be read through the page, preserving the inverted working space of the typesetter.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThis is not simply an illustrated edition of Coleridge. A canonical literary work passes through another system and returns altered. Mechanical shortage becomes the book’s organising structure. Language is retained until the equipment can no longer adequately reproduce it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eTony Kemplen is a Sheffield-based British artist whose practice has moved between installation, printed ephemera, sound, text, digital publishing and photography. During the 1990s he participated in the British artists’ book and multiples network surrounding artist-run presses, book fairs and inexpensive forms of distribution. He contributed repeatedly to Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard’s \u003cem\u003eWords \u0026amp; Pictures\u003c\/em\u003e, a project positioned between magazine, exhibition and book, alongside figures including Martin Creed, Jeremy Deller, David Shrigley, Giorgio Sadotti, Matthew Higgs and Bob and Roberta Smith.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eKemplen’s artists’ books are now represented in national and institutional collections. \u003cem\u003eKubla Can’t\u003c\/em\u003e is held in the Rare Books and Manuscripts collection of the Yale Center for British Art and continues to circulate within histories of British book art and concrete poetry.
