keith-haring-pop-figuration-deitch-projects-new-york-2003
KEITH HARING — Pop Figuration, Deitch Projects, New York, 2003

Original folded exhibition poster / announcement. Offset print in black on lightweight white paper. 29.5 × 66 cm unfolded; 14.75 × 22 cm folded. Six panels, folded as issued. Unsigned and unnumbered; edition size unknown. Deitch Projects, 76 Grand Street, New York, 8 January–15 February 2003.

Produced for Keith Haring’s posthumous exhibition Pop Figuration at Deitch Projects. The exhibition brought together large-scale ink drawings, many approaching mural dimensions, made primarily between 1982 and 1984 — a concentrated period in which Haring developed the figures, bodies, animals and compressed symbolic structures that became his visual vocabulary.

The announcement is unusually substantial for gallery ephemera. One side converts the exhibition information into a hand-drawn field: Haring’s name and the title Pop Figuration are pushed around the perimeter, partly inverted, with the Deitch Projects address and dates absorbed into the composition. The reverse is occupied entirely by a dense black-line drawing of interlocked figures, eyes, animals and hybrid bodies.

Folded, the image becomes an administrable gallery announcement. Opened, it returns to the scale and horizontal movement of a small mural. The six-panel structure interrupts the drawing without containing it; figures continue across the folds and the informational side refuses a single fixed orientation. The poster therefore operates as both distribution material and reproduction — an exhibition carried away from the exhibition.

Issued thirteen years after Haring’s death, this poster also belongs to Deitch Projects’ particular reconstruction of downtown New York culture. The gallery’s programme moved between fine art, street culture, music, fashion, retail display and immersive installation. Pop Figuration presented Haring not simply as an established Pop icon but as a draftsman whose imagery emerged through scale, speed, repetition and physical contact with paper.

Condition: very good. Original horizontal and vertical folds, light handling and minor soft creasing consistent with distribution and storage. Clean overall, without significant tears, losses or later inscriptions. Supplied folded as issued.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0991/5636/1554/files/Haring_Keith._Pop_Figuration_January_8_February_15_2003_76_Grand_Street._2003.jpg?v=1782205188
