The paintings disappear; the language survives.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eJacob had already exhibited at Furstenberg by 1956, when \u003cem\u003eLe Monde\u003c\/em\u003e described paintings populated by suggestions of insects, minerals and algae moving through dense, labyrinthine structures. She occupied an interesting threshold: formally close to post-war abstraction, yet retaining the dream logic, metamorphosis and charged natural imagery of Surrealism.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe address sharpens the picture. Galerie Furstenberg was run during this period by Simone Collinet, formerly Simone Breton and a participant in Surrealism from its earliest years. Under Collinet, the gallery became one of the places where Surrealist networks continued to circulate through 1950s Paris, alongside the increasingly dominant languages of abstraction. Its programme included figures such as Man Ray, Toyen, E.L.T. Mesens and Endre Rozsda.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eJacob's 1959 exhibition therefore sits in an unusually fertile in-between: not quite historical Surrealism, not simply abstraction, but a later continuation in which witches, nymphs, Medusas, sirens, sacred woods and strange marine forms could still operate inside contemporary painting. Closed, the invitation offers little more than artist, date, gallery, address. Unfolded to 27 cm, the object doubles in width and the exhibition turns into a sequence of titles. A small surviving document from Simone Collinet's Furstenberg programme, and from an artist whose position within the post-war Parisian avant-garde deserves considerably more attention.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eCondition: very good; light age toning and minor handling consistent with age.
