Complete and firmly stapled.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFounded in Toronto by AA Bronson, Felix Partz and Jorge Zontal, General Idea used magazines, television, pageants, advertising and museum display to construct — and repeatedly destabilise — the public image of the artist. \u003cem\u003eHaute Culture\u003c\/em\u003e was the first retrospective devoted to the collective, bringing together nearly 300 works across painting, installation, photography, video and publishing. The exhibition later travelled to the Art Gallery of Ontario.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe booklet opens with the instruction to ‘free yourself from the tyranny of individual genius.’ Biography is replaced by a collective name; authorship becomes something performed through styling, repetition and distribution. Its two staged cover portraits operate less as documentation than as further appearances by General Idea within the exhibition’s printed system.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe dates provide another small record of institutional movement.
