Organised under Harald Szeemann, the project preceded his landmark \u003cem\u003eWhen Attitudes Become Form\u003c\/em\u003e exhibition at the same institution by just one year. The photograph is credited on the reverse to Swiss photographer Balthasar Burkhard, whose documentation became closely associated with Szeemann’s Kunsthalle programme.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAnd then there is the stain.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAcross the bottom of the reverse, a soft pink-red tide has entered the paper. It is plainly damage, but it is also the feature that separates this copy from the clean postcard sitting untouched in somebody else’s drawer. Something happened to it. Moisture, contact, storage, another object — the precise cause has disappeared while its evidence remains.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFor an image devoted to wrapping, covering and transforming a building’s surface, the accidental alteration of the card’s own surface feels particularly apt.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe printed information survives above it: CHRISTO: 1968 \/ WRAPPED KUNSTHALLE, BERN, SWITZERLAND.
