The date is particularly good. Balthus was then in the middle of his Roman period and producing works on paper with increasing intensity. Drawings had begun to assume a more visible place in his exhibition history after a New York drawings exhibition in 1963; in 1966 that attention reached Paris, with the Janine Hao presentation coinciding with a major Balthus exhibition at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs. The following year Pierre Matisse Gallery, New York, exhibited drawings and watercolours from 1933–66.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe object is almost anti-designed: no reproduction, colour or decorative device. BALTHUS is the largest piece of information on the card, surrounded only by medium, dates, gallery and opening hours. The invitation relies entirely on the artist’s name and the physical authority of typography and paper. That austerity makes it particularly successful as exhibition ephemera: an exhibition of intimate works on paper reduced to an equally modest paper object.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIt also captures an interesting point in Balthus’s institutional position — already the subject of major museum exhibitions, including MoMA’s 1956–57 retrospective, but still circulating through small Parisian gallery presentations and private collections. MoMA records his works on paper entering its drawings exhibitions throughout this same mid-1960s period.
