Jahrhunderts, this catalogue catches the artist at an unusually productive point of contradiction: the Austrian outsider being formally entered into the institution while his work was becoming increasingly difficult to contain within painting.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eNine years earlier, Rainer had founded the Pintorarium with Friedensreich Hundertwasser and Ernst Fuchs, conceived as an alternative to academic culture and its systems of instruction. The history remains conspicuously present here: the catalogue reproduces the Pintorarium manifesto alongside photographs of the group, folding an earlier act of refusal into the administrative structure of the retrospective.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBut 1968 is also a beginning. Rainer’s overpaintings had already made cancellation, covering and attack into methods of image-making; now the pressure moves onto the artist himself. Photographs of Selbstbemalung, 1968 show his face marked, obscured and repeatedly reconfigured, anticipating the photographic and bodily works that would become central to the following decade.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe cover compresses the Viennese scene particularly well. Rainer, face streaked with paint, sits inside Walter Pichler’s Galaxy 1 chair, photographed by Christian Skrein: painting, experimental design, photography and institutional modernism contained within a single slightly improbable image.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe publication works as more than retrospective documentation. It records a transfer: opposition becoming history without entirely becoming obedient to it. The manifesto becomes archive. The gesture becomes reproduction.
