Urs Fischer

Urs Fischer (b. 1973, Zurich) is a Swiss artist based in New York whose practice spans sculpture, installation, painting, drawing and photography. Known for works that combine formal precision with absurdist humour and material instability — melting wax figures, excavated gallery floors, oversized food objects, candles cast from human bodies — his work operates at the intersection of the monumental and the ephemeral. He has exhibited widely at major institutions and biennials internationally, and has collaborated extensively with collectors, curators and other artists on exhibition and publication projects.

The objects gathered here are printed ephemera and publications relating to Fischer’s exhibition history: catalogues, artist books and printed matter issued for presentations of his work. Each piece records a specific institutional moment and the printed form through which his practice entered public circulation.

fractured-figure-vol-ii-dakis-joannou-collection-deitch-projects-deste-foundation-2008
FRACTURED FIGURE: Vol. II — Works from the Dakis Joannou Collection, Deitch Projects / DESTE Foundation, 2008

Exhibition book. 29.21 × 37.46 cm. 216 pages. Paperback, oversized. Illustrated throughout in colour. Edited by Urs Fischer with Cassandra MacLeod. Exhibition curated by Jeffrey Deitch. Published by Deitch Projects / DESTE Foundation, 2008. Distributed exclusively by D.A.P.; out of stock indefinitely.

Published in connection with Fractured Figure, the DESTE Foundation project drawn from the Dakis Joannou Collection and staged in Athens, 2007–2008. Part of a two-volume book project, with Fischer extending the exhibition into a designed printed form. The publication brings together a dense field of contemporary figuration: Basquiat, Cattelan, Fischer, Gober, Kippenberger, Koons, McCarthy, Mutu, Noble & Webster, Prince, Schutz, Wekua and others.

The cover reproduces a hyperrealist painted relief — a male head in profile, rendered in flesh tones against a warm beige ground, with a small bird or animal form at the shoulder — with the title fractured figure set in plain black lowercase type across the lower half. The back cover carries a black-and-white photographic collage: two hands holding a small reproduction of a landscape painting, layered over torn paper and circular marks. The interior moves between sculpture, drawing, painting and installation, with full-bleed colour plates and minimal captioning.

A collection catalogue that behaves like an exhibition apparatus. Private holdings are converted into public sequence: bodies, fragments, monsters, celebrities, wounds, jokes, market signs. The figure appears not as stable subject but as inventory — damaged, reproduced, installed, circulated. The object records a moment when contemporary figuration, private collecting and exhibition design were folded into one oversized printed support.

Condition: good used condition. Visible rubbing, scratches, edge wear, softened corners and handling marks to wrappers. Interior clean and well-bound. Wear consistent with a large, heavily handled art book.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0991/5636/1554/files/Deich_Jeffrey._Fractured_Figure_exhibition_book._2008.jpg?v=1782543429
