Simon Patterson

Simon Patterson (born 1967, Leatherhead) is a British conceptual artist whose practice centres on the displacement of language and systems of classification. Studying at Goldsmiths College in the late 1980s, Patterson came to wide attention with The Great Bear (1992), a lithograph that reproduces the London Underground map with station names replaced by the names of philosophers, saints, footballers, film stars and other figures — reorganising a familiar navigational system into an absurdist taxonomy of cultural authority.

The work established the terms of a practice that has continued to explore what happens when one ordering system is substituted for another: star charts renamed after Italian painters, airline timetables rewritten with the names of comedians, football league tables replaced by historical figures. The substitution is always precise and the source always legible, which is what allows the displacement to register as both comic and unsettling.

Publications connected to Patterson’s practice — catalogues, artist books, and printed matter — are themselves often sites where language is reorganised, and where the gap between a system and its contents is made visible on the page.

package-holiday-new-british-art-ophiuchus-collection-hydra-1997
PACKAGE HOLIDAY: New British Art in the Ophiuchus Collection. Light handling internally; complete and firmly bound.

In 1997 Pauline Karpidas and Sadie Coles brought fifteen London-based artists to the Hydra Workshop, a former boat-repair space on the island’s harbour. Package Holiday was their first exhibition there together and established the model for the annual programme that followed: artists, curators and galleries temporarily relocated to Hydra, with a publication produced for each presentation.

The exhibition assembled Don Brown, Peter Doig, Tracey Emin, Angus Fairhurst, Damien Hirst, Gary Hume, Sarah Lucas, Paul Noble, Chris Ofili, Richard Patterson, Simon Patterson, Georgina Starr, Sam Taylor-Wood, Nicola Tyson and Gillian Wearing. Each artist was represented by a single work from the Ophiuchus Collection.

The catalogue borrows the visual language of a holiday brochure: uninterrupted blue covers, panoramic views of Hydra, a row of packed suitcases and bright blue headings. A private collection, a London gallery network and a generation of British artists are condensed into one small travel document.

The cover wear now interrupts the continuous blue surface, leaving the catalogue with visible evidence of the movement its title proposed.

Securely packed; tracked UK and international shipping available.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0991/5636/1554/files/Brown_Dan._Doig_Peter._Emin_Tracey._Show_catalogue_Package_Holiday_Hydra._1997.jpg?v=1783901135
