Self-publishing from San Francisco through Zap Comix and a network of small-press titles, Crumb developed a densely cross-hatched drawing style and a cast of recurring characters — Mr. Natural, Fritz the Cat, Devil Girl, the Keep on Truckin’ figure — that became among the most recognisable images in American popular culture while remaining resolutely outside its mainstream.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eCrumb’s work is simultaneously confessional, satirical, obscene and formally exacting. His draftsmanship draws on nineteenth-century illustration, early jazz and blues record sleeves, and the vernacular graphics of American commercial culture, recombining them into a mode of cartooning that is both deeply personal and historically literate. His record cover designs, sketchbooks, magazine contributions and artist books have been collected and exhibited internationally, and his work has entered major museum collections including the Museum of Modern Art, New York.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eCrumb moved to France in 1991, where he continues to live and work. By 1990, Fantagraphics was also assembling his work into the ongoing \u003cem\u003eComplete Crumb Comics\u003c\/em\u003e series, whose second volume received the 1989 Harvey Award for Best Domestic Reprint Project. The same material was therefore being preserved as an archive and redistributed through smaller commercial formats at the same moment.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThis packet converts ten drawings into separate postal units. Each card was made to leave the set, receive an address and enter another circulation. Here they remain together. The envelope retains its original $4.95 price, its cover drawing retains a 1973 copyright, and the later sleeve carries the date 1990.
