Opened out, the card expands into a near full-bleed detail, intensifying the abrasive facture and unstable figuration associated with the series. Prince’s de Kooning paintings rework Willem de Kooning’s already volatile women into a second-order image economy of reproduction, collage, and repainting. Prince had long claimed, half-seriously, that he was born in the Panama Canal Zone, allowing the fictional pavilion to function as both autobiographical myth and institutional prank. Like much of his work surrounding jokes, cowboys, nurses, and appropriated Americana, the truth-status remains deliberately unstable. The pavilion becomes another authored fiction: part self-invention, part critique of national representation, part branding exercise.

The Young Nurses imagery connects the postcard to Prince’s nurse paintings — by 2007 already one of his most recognizable and controversial series. Prince had already spent more than a decade working with images that appeared to belong everywhere and nowhere — advertising photographs, magazine imagery, cowboys and other material detached from its original context. Text by Joe Kalafut. Sixteen pages, staple-bound in textured cream wrappers, 21 × 21.5 cm. Artists included: Bernard Faucon, Ralph Gibson, Don Myer, Bruce Patterson, John Pfahl, Richard Prince, Don Rodan and Victor Schrager.

The eight photographers brought together here each intervene at a different stage in the making of an image. Bernard Faucon builds scenes with mannequins before photographing them; John Pfahl makes physical additions to landscapes prior to exposure; Victor Schrager compresses objects and reproductions into constructed still life; Don Rodan works through the Polaroid SX-70 format; and Richard Prince takes photographs already circulating in commercial culture and photographs them again. The catalogue has not yet adopted the shorthand through which several of these practices would later be understood. That is precisely what makes it useful now.

Richard Prince is represented by Four Men Facing Right, 1979, four Ektacolor photographs, 16 × 20 inches each, courtesy Castelli Graphics Gallery. The short artist biography printed alongside his work records solo exhibitions with Ellen Sragow, New York, and Galerie Jöllenbeck, Cologne — exhibitions that do not appear in Prince's current selected chronology, which opens with Artists Space and CEPA Gallery in 1980. The Sragow exhibitions are documented elsewhere: Workout (March 1976), In Complete Control (September–October 1976) and The Author (November–December 1977). An early Metro Pictures biography similarly lists Sragow, Artists Space, CEPA and Jöllenbeck together.

Later institutional accounts are not consistent on this point. MoMA's 1992 publication Allegories of Modernism: Contemporary Drawing describes Prince's advertising photographs as “first shown at the Galerie Jollenbeck, Cologne, in 1978,” while characterising his 1980 exhibitions at Artists Space and CEPA as his “first one-man exhibitions.” In 1980, Altered Subjects records Sragow, Jöllenbeck and Artists Space as part of the same continuous solo exhibition history. By 1992, that history was already being described differently. The catalogue preserves a contemporaneous version of the record before those distinctions had settled.

Douglas Crimp's Pictures exhibition had taken place at Artists Space in 1977; Prince was not included, though questions around photographic reproduction and appropriation were already in circulation. Here he appears simply as one photographer among eight, before the category with which his work would become associated had fully formed. For this issue, that instability became the cover itself. The usual Bald Ego masthead disappears. JACK SPADE takes its place, while Bald Ego survives only on the spine and in the coverline: “Bald Ego sells out!”

The substitution was deliberate, and D.A.P.’s own catalogue copy for the issue confirms the terms of it directly: “Jack Spade transformed the cover into a readymade.” O’Brien later described the mechanics himself — Andy Spade, founder of Jack Spade and husband of Kate Spade, had developed a running practice of placing the Jack Spade name onto businesses he did not own, including a favourite barbershop and a Houston Street bar, describing the activity as a “commercial readymade” and consciously invoking Duchamp. Bald Ego became another site for the gesture: according to O’Brien, they simply put “Jack Spade” where their own logo normally appeared.

The joke is better than a conventional collaboration because it operates directly through authorship and ownership. Jack Spade does not merely advertise in the magazine. For the duration of the cover, the brand becomes the magazine. The publication retains its material identity while its public name is reassigned. The cover makes that exchange physical: a tuft of real fur sits beneath acetate while the Jack Spade name occupies the authoritative masthead position. Brand, magazine, advertisement and artwork begin to collapse into one another.

The roster inside makes the gesture land harder. Contributors include Richard Prince, Elizabeth Peyton, John Lurie, Philip Taaffe, Fred Tomaselli, Keith Sonnier, Jack Pierson, Tom Sachs, Charline von Heyl, Don Van Vliet, McDermott & McGough, Gary Indiana, Elias Khoury, James Salter, Sam Matamoros, Santé D’Orazio, Jane Dickson, Jeremy Blake, Stephen Mueller, Gary Simmons, Theresa Duncan, Andrew Kleinzahler, Robert Polito, Valery Oisteanu, Gerard Milanga, Elaine Equi, Laura Letinsky, Davitt Sigerson, Hooman Majd, Barney Kulok, Geoffrey Cruickshank-Hagenbuckle, Dike Blair, James Gilroy, and Ted Barron, whose photo-essay “Brooklyn Smackdown” documents independent lucha libre wrestling in grainy black-and-white.

Richard Prince’s contribution, “Bomb Dream Enameled,” pairs a text first copyrighted in 1975 with paintings whose surfaces are stencilled with fragments of popular culture and trivia. Derain, Braque, Léger, Duchamp-Villon, Picabia and de Chirico appear alongside references to Mad, Playboy and Interview: art history and mass-media information flattened into the same circulating language. Elizabeth Peyton’s “Heroes” contributes her loose, luminous watercolour portraits of young male subjects.

A magazine already engaged with image culture, celebrity and appropriation temporarily allows a commercial brand to appropriate the magazine itself — and does so while publishing Richard Prince, whose practice has repeatedly tested precisely these boundaries of attribution, reproduction and ownership.

There is an unresolved piece of New York history on the back cover: an advertisement for La Esquina, Comida Tradicional de la Capital, 106 Kenmare Street. The better-known La Esquina is associated with 114 Kenmare Street and a 2005–06 opening, so the relationship between the advertisement here and the later restaurant remains uncertain. It is worth retaining as evidence rather than forcing a conclusion.

The object stages a transfer of identity. A commercial brand takes the position normally occupied by an editorial title. Bald Ego remains materially present — on the spine, inside the magazine, in its editorial structure — but externally it has been renamed. The gesture recalls the readymade without reproducing it literally. Nothing new has to be fabricated. Meaning changes because the existing object is reassigned, relabelled and recirculated. And because Prince appears inside, the structure doubles back on itself: a magazine carrying an artist associated with appropriation has itself been appropriated by a brand whose founder explicitly described his practice through Duchamp.

Magazine becomes support. Brand becomes author. Advertising becomes cover. Commerce becomes material. O’Brien’s own punchline remains the most economical description of the whole arrangement: “Bald Ego sells out!” Except the sell-out is not outside the work.
