On 4 October 1969, Jean Schuster published \u003cem\u003eLe Quatrième Chant\u003c\/em\u003e in \u003cem\u003eLe Monde\u003c\/em\u003e, announcing the dissolution of the Paris Surrealist group. Only a few months later, André-François Petit assembled this exhibition of drawings, watercolours and collages. This was not a new manifesto. It was Surrealism already being historicized, collected and sold.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe selection is deliberately impure. Giorgio de Chirico supplied Surrealism with its dream architecture but later rejected the movement. Francis Picabia and Sophie Taeuber-Arp came through Dada. Fernand Léger was never a Surrealist. Dalí’s relationship with Breton’s circle had long since collapsed. Paul Éluard and Georges Hugnet were primarily poets, while Marie-Laure de Noailles was simultaneously patron, collector, social force and practicing artist. Galerie François Petit was not documenting a disciplined membership list; it was constructing a genealogy.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe historical core — Bellmer, Brauner, Dalí, Domínguez, Ernst, Fini, Lam, Magritte, Man Ray, Masson, Matta, Paalen, Picabia, Tanguy and Toyen — is joined by figures who complicate the standard Paris-centred story: the Czech avant-garde of Štyrský and Toyen; the Caribbean modernism of Wifredo Lam; Chilean-born Roberto Matta; Romanian Victor Brauner and Jules Perahim; Cuban-born Jorge Camacho; Austrian-Mexican Wolfgang Paalen; Swedish Max Walter Svanberg; and postwar psychic realists including Dado, Fred Deux, Konrad Klapheck, Robert Malaval and Paul Wunderlich.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe most painful names are printed almost casually. Marie-Laure de Noailles died on 29 January 1970, during the exhibition’s stated run. Unica Zürn appears beside the generation that repeatedly overshadowed her — not as Hans Bellmer’s model or muse, but as an exhibiting artist. She died later in 1970. Their presence gives this small card the quality of a closing document.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe thirty-six names are printed in calligraphic type; they are not autographs. This is exhibition ephemera, not an artist-signed multiple.
