The exhibition brought together more than thirty artists, including Jennifer Bartlett, Jon Borofsky, Francesco Clemente, Ron Gorchov, Mimmo Paladino, Sigmar Polke, Julian Schnabel, Pat Steir, Bernar Venet and Claude Viallat. The accompanying publication included texts by Catherine Millet and Severo Sarduy.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eOrganised at a moment when expressive, figurative and historically referential painting was re-entering international contemporary art, Baroques 81 has subsequently been identified as an early institutional presentation of the emerging postmodern condition. Millet’s selection placed European and American practices together under the deliberately expansive idea of “baroque” excess.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe fluorescent pink-and-blue programme also records the wider ARC season: poetry, jazz, film and experimental theatre, with appearances by Édouard Glissant, Robert Pinget, Jacques Dupin and Carles Santos. The separate notice invites recipients to an auditorium meeting with Catherine Millet on 29 October 1981.
