Born Armand Pierre Fernandez, he adopted the single name Arman following a printer’s error on a catalogue cover in 1958.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWorking initially in Nice and later in New York, Arman produced \u003cem\u003eAccumulations\u003c\/em\u003e — works in which identical or related objects were massed together in transparent containers or cast in resin — and \u003cem\u003eCoupes\u003c\/em\u003e and \u003cem\u003eColères\u003c\/em\u003e, in which objects were sliced, burned or smashed and the fragments reassembled or displayed. His engagement with consumer goods, musical instruments and industrial materials positioned the object itself as both subject and medium, and his work consistently interrogated the relationship between use, value and destruction.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eArman was a founding signatory of Yves Klein’s \u003cem\u003eManifeste du Nouveau Réalisme\u003c\/em\u003e (1960) and maintained a close friendship with Klein throughout his life. His participation in \u003cem\u003ePhotonotations\u003c\/em\u003e (Rosa Esman Gallery, 1976) reflects his sustained engagement with American art institutions during the period of his New York residency. The exhibition belongs to a period in which the camera was increasingly used by artists not simply to produce photographs, but to document temporary actions, stage propositions and carry broader artistic ideas. Rosa Esman Gallery returned to the subject with \u003cem\u003ePhotonotations II\u003c\/em\u003e the following year.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eSegal’s image already performs the title: a figure works across an illuminated theatre marquee, interrupting its letters and leaving the message temporarily unreadable.
